Seminar Schedule

The goal of the Seminar Series is to create awareness about career opportunities in a variety of industry sectors. This year there are two seminar areas: one focused around Trades & Technology and the other geared towards Career Options. Seminar presentations are 30 minutes in duration. No registration is necessary for the Seminars. Seating is first come, first serve!

This presentation will focus primarily on careers in Animation, Game Art & Design, Visual Effects, Digital Photography, and Acting.

Employers are approached by students looking for jobs all the time. How do you distinguish yourself from every other applicant?  What criteria are employers basing their hiring decision on? How do you sell yourself so that any potential employer will want to hire you?

This seminar gives an overview of the steps to get the job you want by identifying 3 key personal selling points. Learn tips on how to handle yourself by phone, e-mail or in person from start to finish. In addition, learn how to spotlight these selling points in your business card, resume, interview and follow-up.

BC’s Industry Training Authority will present an engaging, interactive and informative presentation entitled 'The Trades and You".

Through this multimedia show, the ITA aims to better inform you about career opportunities in trades by answering three fundamental questions: 

1. What are the trades?
2. Why are they good education and career options?
3. How can I learn more and even get started on a trade in high school?

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to work in the film industry as a make-up artist or a fashion stylist, or dreamed of spending your career in a luxury spa as a technician or a master hairstylist then we’ll see you there! 
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM Video Game Advanced Character 3D Modeling Think Tank Training Centre
3D modeling workflow is a hotly debated subject. The rise of video games as a super power in the world of CG has given a huge boost to the technology and the way we approach 3D modeling.
 
This seminar will describe a highly efficient, state of the art workflow for advanced modeling for video games, television, and feature film characters. An artist will explore efficient base meshes in XSI, the transition into Mudbox and ZBrush, and the use of “Normal Maps” and “Displacement Maps” to achieve dazzling results from low poly models. These techniques have become the standard in all three industries.

Nowadays, culinary training is not only a must for aspiring chefs, but also a very important component in any field of the tourism and hospitality industry.  
2:00 PM - 2:30 PM Trades & Applied Technology Vancouver Island University
Occupations in the skilled trades have been highlighted in the past few years as a good option for those looking for an interesting and rewarding career.  This session highlights what skilled trades are really about, how apprenticeship works and how to become one of the skilled people who keep the world working so that others can have water, food and shelter.  The session also provides information on the job opportunities that will develop from skilled trades and will provide an opportunity for discussion, questions and sharing of information.
