Katimavik Youth Services

Katimavik offers two immersive programs for Canada’s youth

Katimavik’s mission is to develop diverse youth as engaged, caring citizens and capable contributors and leaders for a better Canada. Katimavik collaborates with other organizations to foster understanding, respect, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and with Canada’s other diverse cultures, regions and the environment.

To do this, Katimavik offers two immersive programs for Canada’s youth: the National Experience, a 5.5-month volunteering program for youth from 17 to 25 years old, and FuturePerfect, a 14-week employment training program open for youth from 18 to 30 years old.

The National Experience

The National Experience is a fully immersive 5.5-month program that brings together groups of 11 young adults who share and manage a Katimavik house while living in two different communities across Canada. The groups will be accompanied by a Project Leader, who resides in the house to mentor this life-changing experience. This program challenges youth to make a positive impact in each of the communities while also developing a vast set of skills and competencies.

During the program, participants will:

  • Volunteer 30 hours a week at local non-profit organizations;
  • Learn about Indigenous peoples in Canada and engage in meaningful Truth and Reconciliation initiatives;
  • Design and implement community projects;
  • Plan cultural discovery group outings and fun activities during evenings and weekends;
  • Manage all aspects of the Katimavik house, including daily meal preparation.

The program challenges young people in Canada with a transformative experience to empower them to become:

  • Supporters of Truth and Reconciliation across Canada;
  • Contributors to an eco-friendly and sustainable world;
  • Advocates for inclusiveness and diversity; and
  • Confident change-makers working towards a better Canada.

To apply to this program, you must be between 17 and 25 years old at the start date of the program and be a Canadian citizen and/or Permanent resident and/or Refugee.

The next cohorts are:

  • January 11, 2023, to June 14, 2023;
  • July 14, 2023, to December 13, 2023.
